Last week was so weird (and not just because the fourth of July on a Wednesday produced an awkward work week).
The beginning of the week was great, quite normal actually. Even the fourth of July was pretty spectacularly normal. We saw a parade.
We hung out with friends and played with their kids.
We even saw fireworks (from our bedroom window – can’t get much better than that).
Then, on Thursday, the excitement really picked up. You see, my husband’s coworker took his family on a summer vacation and asked us to watch his dog.
I love dogs. I have two of my own – a 17 pound Rat-cha terrier and a 35 pound boxer mix. So we inherited an 85 pound labrador for the weekend. I immediately commenced with the playing and snuggling.
Then, Friday morning, my throat started to get itchy. By lunch, I was extremely fatigued – like I had a twenty pound weight tied around my neck. I couldn’t focus and I was getting confused, so I took the afternoon off, thinking maybe I was just overly tired.
Saturday morning, my voice was croaky and I was in a full on sinus infection mode. But it was more than my typical sinus infection. I wasn’t just head-achy and congested. I was itchy and fatigued like you would never believe. By lunch, I was convinced it was the dog.
I’m not allergic to dogs, but I’m allergic to a lot of other things – cats, pollen, mold, dust (if it gets out of hand). It’s probably what has motivated me the most to be so clean and organized. But the weekend was almost over, and soon the dog would be going back to the owners. We created “safe zones” (our bedroom and my office) for me to go to hopefully get better without a lot of exposure.
Then, Sunday night, we got the text.
They weren’t coming home until NEXT Sunday. Michael’s friend felt awful about the mix up as well as the potential allergies the dog brought with him. However, we just changed the game plan. We washed EVERYTHING – carpets, furniture, the dogs (all three of them), the dog bedding, etc. We had washed all of our clothes on Saturday, so the washer and dryer kept running well into Monday.
However, while there was something on the dog that agitated my illness, we aren’t quite sure it was the cause. All I know now is that I am feeling better, and I can love on all three dogs this week. I just hope to continue getting better so that we can have fun this coming weekend!
